CHRONIC DISEASES AND SUGAR

Accusing Sugar of being the criminal behind many common day chronic diseases is like accusing your little brother of crimes he did not commit when you were the chief culprit.

The chief culprit is YOU. You eat too much sugar. It is not good to eat too much of anything. It is said that if you abuse your body for about 20 years the body will complain and may react. So it is desirable to change your eating patterns so that does not occur.

Sugar is safe, in moderation. It is natural and has been around for a few thousand years. It is one of nature’s gifts as a preservative. It means we can store food for the lean times. Just adding sugar as we do in jam making preserves the fruit. Or we can ferment the food so that the sugar in converted to alcohol or further into vinegar. We use vinegar and sugar when preserving a variety of vegetables as chutneys. They have a long shelf life. More interestingly milk sugar can be changed by added enzymes acting on the milk sugar, lactose, in the making of cheeses from milk. Those who are sensitive to milk sugar can eat cheese.

Truly a Superfood! Sugar is probably the only food deserving of that title. Chapter 12 of the book, Avoiding the Marketing Traps: Consumers Guide to Wise Sugar Shopping will point you in the right direction. And Chapter 10 will take you further – The All important Fine Print: Understanding Food Labels.
